International Men’s Day is November 19, 2017, and it’s a perfect opportunity for women to celebrate men.
There’s a famous saying “It takes all kinds to make the world go around.” From farmers to chefs and bugle boys to corporals, our vast and varied world needs people of all skills and temperaments. We categorize people many ways including by gender. Both genders bring unique characteristics and strengths to the daily workings of our communities; and in November, we celebrate men for International Men’s Day.
At first glance, one might think this is just a chance for men to talk about their struggles and triumphs–it’s a day for men to celebrate each other. But it’s more than that. It’s also a day for women to listen and to celebrate ‘the other half’ of the population.
Women have endured much adversity since the beginning of time, so we are uniquely qualified to hear and understand men’s struggles and find solutions to the dangers and discriminations they face. Every person in the world faces unfair treatment and being misunderstood. One group’s struggles are not erased by the trials of another group. Men’s Day is our chance to proffer unity and compassion in a world so often torn by gender competition.
What we all really need is to be heard.
We also get the chance to celebrate the men who have made a positive difference in our lives personally and for women’s lives collectively. The official website of International Men’s Day says, “The ability to sacrifice your needs on behalf of others is fundamental to manhood, as is honour. The world recognizes importance of rites of passage, including sacrifice in the development of Manhood.” By celebrating positive role models and the potential honour available to all men, women encourage the current and next generation to become men who will make the world a kinder, more honourable place. Men, in all their diverse glory, deserve a day to be appreciated for all they are and all they can be. We women should celebrate them because they are fellow people, with unique perspectives on this world we share.
Happy International Men’s Day!
